How To Reduce Electromagnetic Radiation At Home

Cell phones, Wi-Fi, electronic devices… generate harmful electromagnetic fields. We can counteract this electromagnetic pollution with some precautions
Living with technology without damaging health

Our environment is full of technology that subjects us to radiation 24 hours a day. We are exposed to the low frequencies of power lines, substations and electrical transformers, of railway lines, of everyday household appliances and of household electrical wiring.

And we also suffer from high frequencies (radio frequencies, and within these, microwaves, from 300 MHz to 300 GHz), a product of the boom in telecommunications and digital technology: television, radio and telephone antennas, Wi-Fi, mobile , bluetooth …

There are currently up to 25,000 scientific publications on all this electromagnetic pollution, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Most of the research leaves no room for doubt: electromagnetic fields – high and low frequencies – alter the biology of people and animals.

How does electromagnetic pollution affect health?

The problem is that the symptoms are very common and go almost unnoticed: dizziness, fatigue, headache, itchy skin or eyes, anxiety, depression, loss of concentration or memory, sleep disorders, digestive problems, eczema, dryness respiratory tract, allergies …

No appliance should be switched on in the bedroom, and even less near the headboard

This aggressive environment deteriorates the body’s response capacity to defend itself and opens the door to serious diseases: cancer, leukemia, Alzheimer’s, important alterations of the nervous and immune systems …

What can we do at home to reduce our exposure?

Fighting the low frequencies of power stations and transformers or the high frequencies of cell phone masts near the home may seem like a Herculean task, but it is not a losing battle.

The best solution is to approach associations that support this struggle, such as Ecologists in Action or the Vivo Sano Foundation. In some cases, companies may be required to shield with ferromagnetic foils. But, in addition, there are things that we can do at home.

  • Small household appliances. The clock radio makes it difficult to rest at night because it incorporates a transformer and a motor that generate a strong electromagnetic field. In fact, no appliance should be turned on in the bedroom, and even less near the headboard, because it interferes with the cellular repair carried out by the body during rest. The electric razor, hair dryer, mixer, and motorized devices create very high fields. The alternative to the dryer is the one with the motor attached to the wall, as in hotels.
  • Home appliances. In the case of the dryer and the washing machine, the fields reach three meters apart, so they must be moved away from the places where you spend more time. With glass-ceramic and induction hobs, powerful radiation is received at waist level; therefore, pregnant women must be very careful. Microwave ovens are required to include shielding, but they can still leak radiation. If we use them, we must separate at least two meters or even leave the kitchen.
  • Tablets and laptops. They are almost always connected to the Internet and must be kept away from the body, never on the knees or near the stomach or testicles, as they cause male infertility and ovarian disorders. Pregnant women should be doubly cautious. The safest thing is to discard the Wi-Fi mode and use Ethernet-type cables. In the case of turning it on, you have to move at least two meters away. Obstacles such as walls or furniture hinder the propagation of high frequencies but do not prevent it.

Mobile phones, tablets and laptops must be kept away from the body, never place them on the knees

  • Screens and lighting. Flat screen televisions generate lower fields than tube televisions, but it is still advisable to move them a minimum distance of 50 cm. The computer tower should be one meter away from the chair. Regarding lighting, halogen bulbs with non-toroidal transformer or fluorescent bulbs with ballast and transformer generate strong radiation and should not be used as floor or table lamps.
  • Electronics devices. Children should not use their mobile phones and neither should we if they are nearby, because they absorb 50% more radiation and microwaves penetrate the brain more easily. The cordless phones with DECT technology also work with microwaves. Under no circumstances should DECT surveillance cameras or devices be placed next to the crib, as the organism of children is more contami sensitive to these radiations.
  • Electrical wiring. The electrical task must be placed underground, not on the surface or on the roof. The cables, strips and extensions that we use must be shielded and we will avoid placing the head of the bed near an electrical installation or a plug. The walls where the beds are supported should be free of cables. Likewise, we must discard the new digital meters, since their frequency modulation technology has not proven to be completely safe.
