Toothpaste powder is a simple, sustainable and healthy alternative to ordinary toothpaste. There are several ways to make powdered toothpaste, but most recipes use similar basic ingredients. This powder generally contains baking soda and aromatic plants, so you can easily prepare it at home.

If you want to make toothpaste powder, you should be aware that orthodox dentists will consider its effectiveness to be low. Obviously the homemade version does not contain fluoride or detergents. But if you clean your teeth several times a day, you don’t always have to do it with a commercial toothpaste. You can combine them: once with pasta and two or three with your homemade powder.

What’s the problem with commercial toothpastes?

Why shouldn’t you abuse conventional toothpastes? Virtually all of them contain surfactant detergents that soften the tissues and can cause changes in the gums. It can even make teeth more sensitive to cavities.

Manufacturers use them because they produce a lot of foam, which gives us a feeling of hygiene, they are cheap and they do not have conservation problems. Many pastes also contain unhealthy halogenated organic compounds and polyethylene glycols (PEGs), which promote the permeability of the mucosa to harmful substances, as well as colorants and preservatives.

And finally, some pastes include antibiotic compounds , such as chlorhexidine and triclosan, which are supposed to stop bacteria, but which destroy the natural ecosystem of the mouth and favor the appearance of drug-resistant bacteria.

The alternative to these pastes is certified organic toothpastes, which do not contain detergents derived from petroleum, polyethylene glycols or antibiotics, or homemade preparations like this.

Three Ingredient Toothpaste Powder

The basic recipe for toothpaste powder is very simple, you will only need three ingredients:

Ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons of horse chestnut powder (you can buy it or make it from peeled chestnuts)
  • 1 tablespoon of baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon xylitol
  • 10 to 15 dried sage leaves (approximately 5 g). If you have your own sage plants in the garden or on the balcony, you can harvest the leaves and dry them in the sun.

Elaboration:

  1. Put the horse chestnut powder, baking soda and sage in a mortar or coffee grinder and grind to a very fine powder. The consistency should be similar to that of refined flour. If the powder is too coarse, it can damage your teeth and gums.
  2. Pour the toothpaste into a jar with a lid.

Using toothpaste is simple: moisten the head of your toothbrush and apply a small amount of powder to it. You can do it with a teaspoon of coffee.

Do not put the brush in the jar with the powder because it will contaminate it. Always keep the toothpaste well closed. This will last you several months.

What are the properties of the ingredients?

  • Sage has an antiviral, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect in the mouth. This is due to the rosmarinic acid it contains. Thus, it helps against inflammation of the gums, for example, but is also suitable to support oral hygiene.
  • Dentists also confirm the positive effects of horse chestnut: it contains compounds called saponins with soap-like properties that also strengthen the gums and can help the development of teeth.
  • Baking soda is considered a simple home remedy for teeth whitening. When brushing, the small granules of bicarbonate settle on the teeth and illuminate the tooth surface for a short period of time. However, too hard “sanding” could damage tooth enamel. That is why it is important to grind the bicarbonate as finely as possible and not apply too much force when brushing. However, the abrasiveness of a conventional paste is greater than that of bicarbonate if it is used correctly. But if you are concerned about this aspect, you can substitute it for white clay for internal use.

Optional ingredients

  • The xylitol or birch sugar not only softens the taste of the toothpowder, but also prevents cavities.
  • You can also add 10 to 15 dried mint leaves that will give your toothpaste a fresh note. Instead of fresh mint, you can also use a few drops of peppermint oil or essential oil of eucalyptus or peppermint.
  • You can also enhance the taste of toothpaste with half a teaspoon of cinnamon, which also has antibacterial properties.
